China Exchange Dancers join hundreds to perform in Trafalgar Square

The team of China Exchange dancers, coached by Goldsmith’s Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance, joined hundreds of other groups on Saturday to perform in Trafalgar Square. Following the experience of learning the Chinese-infused version of the Big Dance Pledge choreography, the group were keen to take on the additional challenge of learning an extended version of the dance and to join other dancers – of all levels of experience – in the special performance.

Despite rehearsing under a London downpour on Friday, the team stayed focused and were rewarded with a double rainbow over Nelson’s Column. The auspicious weather continued and the sun made a welcome appearance throughout the public performances.

Akram Khan, who joined China Exchange for our Big Dance Pledge celebration and surprised our dancers, addressed the crowds to share his appreciation for the dancers’ commitment and for reflecting the themes of overcoming adversity and creating unity.

The China Exchange dancers shared their excitement and have made a request that we harness their enthusiasm and create more opportunities to share Chinese dance. Watch this space!
