Hear Chalice Mitchell talk about her practice as a female artist applying ink painting concepts in her works to challenge the gender stereotypes in life. Learn about the aesthetic in Zen and Taoist philosophy which brought conceptual influences to Chalice’s art.
Chalice is fascinated by Japanese ink painting and she utilises this Eastern traditional art in her practise and creates her own language to depict femininity and power. The alternative representations are the fruits of the combination of her training in Western art and interpretation of Eastern cultures.
Artist’s statement
Born in Western Massachusetts, I have lived and worked in the United States, Canada, Japan, and England. In 2003, I received a BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design and in 2013, an MFA from the University of South Florida. Exploring the definitions and divisions of what constitutes femininity, I dissect power and muscularity. Having participated in combat sports all my life, I am keenly aware of the limitation and falsehood of gendered stereotypes and create artwork in order to destabilize gender paradigms.
