In 1967, the streets of Hong Kong became a battleground as pro-Chinese Communists and their sympathisers clashed with the British establishment. Flash forward to 2014 and the city was once again in combat. Only this time, following the 1997 handover of Hong Kong, Communist China had become the establishment targeted by protestors. Our panel will discuss what can be made of these two events and what they say about alternative voices in the city’s past and present.

The panel comprises of bestselling writer and historian Julia Lovell, who is currently writing a book on the global travels of Chinese communism, former Hong Kong resident, published novelist and managing editor of Asia Literary Review Phillip Kim, and Xu Guoqi, a professor at Hong Kong University originally from Mainland China.

This event is in partnership with Asia House though the event will take place at China Exchange.
