Hong Kong Focus at China in Context
China in Context will feature three events with a special focus on Hong Kong. Supported by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, the focus will celebrate the role that Hong Kong has played as a cultural translator and the creativity of writing from this unique region. China in Context is the UK’s first annual festival celebrating writers and writing from and about China. Founded in 2016, the festival is now in it’s second year.
Three vibrant events will make up our Hong Kong Focus at China in Context. On 13 March a talk with Roger Lee 李恩霖, one of Hong Kong’s most renowned screen writers and film producers, will be followed by a screening of his acclaimed film A Simple Life 《桃姐》. Roger’s works have marked a transformative phase in Hong Kong cinema. He is currently writing a book for a stage musical for the 2019 Hong Kong Arts Festival on the subject of autistic and dyslexic young adults.
Known as China’s Tolkien, Jin Yong 金庸 is a house-hold name across East Asia, but little known in the West. On Saturday 17 March we’ll discover how a new translation by Anna Holmwood may finally open up his epic novels for English-speaking readers.
Poet and Hong Kong native Jennifer Wong will whet your appetite for culinary verse within a free 60 minute poetry workshop focused on food on Sunday 18 March. No writing experience is necessary. The workshop is free and open to all.
