Launching the Champion London Chinatown’s Heritage Campaign

China Exchange has launched a new crowdfunding campaign – the Chinatown-based charity’s most ambitious effort yet to create lasting and positive change in London’s Chinatown.

The campaign needs to secure £21,320 in pledges by 11 May to deliver projects that protect and celebrate unrecorded East and South East Asian heritage in Chinatown. The funds raised will allow for China Exchange to:

  • Design & install two large interpretation boards in Gerrard street
  • Train eight new History Champion walking tour guides for the charity’s community-led walking tour programme
  • Research and develop a Chinatown food heritage trail documenting and celebrating the intangible food cultural heritage
  • Train and engage 12 volunteers to gather food heritage stories from businesses with heritage at risk

The crowdfunding effort is part of #MakeLondon, a campaign backed by the Mayor of London to support community-led projects to help local areas recover from the COVID-19 crisis.

There are 11 heritage plaques in Chinatown that detail fascinating snippets of history but not one of them mentions the area’s cultural connection to East Asian diaspora. China Exchange is determined to change this.

How to pledge for the Champion London Chinatown’s Heritage campaign

To pledge to the project, click the yellow “Back this project!” button on the campaign page.

You will then be asked to enter the pledge amount and the name under which you would like it to be made (there is an option to pledge anonymously).

If you are not logged into a Spacehive account then, you will be directed to log in or create an account. Spacehive requires basic account information (name, email address, and password) so that they can contact backers regarding their pledge if need be.

After creating a Spacehive account, you can then select your payment method.

You are then asked to authorise the payment but will only be charged when, and only when, the project hits its funding target.
