Made in Chinatown

Working with artists, a team of dedicated volunteers and community members, China Exchange has developed a range of products rooted in the heritage of London’s Chinatown. These are not your average souvenirs! The Made in Chinatown brand was developed and led by our volunteers, reflecting the Chinatown that they want to see represented and highlighting the history that connects with them.

Artists complete a residency facilitated by China Exchange and focused on sharing the multiple layers, identities, experiences and meanings of Chinatown and its heritage. A dedicated team of volunteers connect with the project and work with the artists and with community members to hold creative activities. The artist then adapts this material into designs for small-bath produced and handmade items that build the Made in Chinatown product range. Volunteers also work on the marketing and sales of the products, which are sold through an online shop and stocked in Chinatown stores. All proceeds support future community projects in London’s Chinatown.

This project began with a small pilot funded by the income China Exchange generates through venue hire in 2018 before a first full phase 2019-2020 funded by Rothschild Foundation. The second full phase 2021-2022 is funded by TNL Awards for All.
