Artists Confirmed for Chinatown Residencies

Two internationally exhibited artists have been selected for the Made in Chinatown project at China Exchange. Between February and May 2020, Pui Lee and Etka Kaul will complete a residency at China Exchange before working with a team of volunteers and community groups to develop unique souvenirs rooted in the heritage and character of London’s Chinatown.

Based in Gateshead, Pui Lee is a British-born Hakka Chinese artist and arts educator, working throughout the UK. Pui Lee’s artistic practice is wide-ranging and she uses an interdisciplinary approach across both traditional and contemporary 2D and 3D art forms. Pui Lee is a regular visiting artist for many galleries, museums and organisations across the North of England. Her Made in Chinatown residency will focus on traditional Chinese woodblock printing techniques.

Ekta Kaul is an award winning London based artist. Her artistic practice is focused on creating narrative embroidered maps that explore places, histories and belonging through stitch. Ekta’s work is held in several public and private collections in the UK and internationally including The New Craftsmen, Contemporary Applied Arts, Museum of Art and Design NYC, and Conran Shop Tokyo. She has received awards from the Crafts Council and the Arts Council, England and was the finalist in Jerwood Makers Open 2019.
