New Artist In Residence for Made in Chinatown
Made in Chinatown returns this year with Cherie Kwok as our new artist in residence.
Cherie Kwok will work with China Exchange volunteers and Chinatown community members for the next phase of Made in Chinatown, a project to bring together artists, community members and volunteers to create unique products rooted in London Chinatown heritage.
Between May and September, Cherie Kwok will complete a residency with China Exchange focused on the area’s multi-layered history and intangible food cultural heritage while learning about the meaning and memories created in the area from community members and volunteers. Cherie will hold creative workshops as part of her residency to create connections with people and their Chinatown experiences. The residency will result in an exclusive range of small batch produced items under the Made in Chinatown brand.
Cherie is a freelance illustrator based in Birmingham, with a visual language inspired by her Chinese heritage. Cultural identity, diversity, mental health, and wellbeing are key topics in her work. Her practice consists of editorial, advertising, publishing, and community-based projects. She has worked with Birmingham Design Festival, Women & Theatre, Birmingham Art Book, Ohana Magazine, and more.
On confirming her residency, Cherie Kwok said:
I feel extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn and showcase the different layers of London Chinatown. Being able to work with the amazing team at China Exchange and help contribute to the important work that they do is very exciting. Chinatown has such a fascinating history with so many individuals who have helped make it become what it is today. I am really looking forward to exploring the different stories that have shaped the area and engaging with the community through workshops.
This phase of the Made in Chinatown project is funded through the TNL Awards for All scheme.
