Opportunities to understand China, Chinese culture and Chinatown

Fashion designer and lecturer, Odella Yue has been selected as the artist in residency for the Chinatown Recovery project, exploring the impact of COVID-19 racism on London’s Chinatown through art.

Between March and August 2021, Odella will complete a residency with China Exchange focused on the multi-layered history of London’s Chinatown while learning about the impact of COVID-19 racism on the neighbourhood from community members and volunteers. The residency will result in an exclusive range of small batch produced items under the Made in Chinatown brand.

Growing up in both China and the UK, Odella has developed strong bonds with both cultures and extended her interests in culture and art into her academic study and professional career. As an independent designer and educator, Odella has a strong interest in promoting cultural diversity as well as challenging cultural stereotypes within society. Passionate about producing bold contemporary print while taking inspiration from traditional elements, Odella uses symbolic visual components and vivid colour to inspire creative dialogues between the audience and the art.

Odella has showcased her womenswear collections in London Fashion Week and London Graduate Fashion Week, and participated in overseas design weeks and music video collaborations. Magazine features include Vogue, Man Repeller, Drama, and Contributor. She has extensive experience of delivering workshops and involving people in creative ideas and projects.

The Chinatown Recovery project is funded by the WCMT. For more information about the project, the residency or Made in Chinatown, please email info@chinaexchange.uk
